Here's the problem... the only permits which will allow you to hike the JMT SOBO starting in Yosemite are Happy Isles (Donahue Pass Eligible) and Lyell Canyon (Donahue Pass Eligible). Without one of those permits you won't be legal exiting Yosemite via the JMT and, therefore technically not eligible to hike the JMT south of Yosemite.Reds Meadow Road closures. After we got out of Yosemite and over Donahue, we saw people every day but never did we feel like it was crowded or that we couldn't find solitude or peace apart from others. The days are usually sunny, but days and nights are cold. Nights can be down in the 20s or teens, so you have to be prepared for that. Every year for the past few years there has been a storm that drops a couple inches of snow in late September, and then it mostly melts off.
